Wardrobe Tips

My Fall Wardrobe Wishlist

By DeAndrea Douglas

I took stock of my wardrobe (literally) and I’m still elated at how much easier shopping and putting together outfits has been! Now that I have a clear inventory of what I have, it’s easy to see what I’m missing that would help complete more outfits or what I need to replace. Plus—since I’m carrying a digitized version of my closet with me—if I’m out and something catches my eye I can take a beat to really consider if it’s worth spending money on.

I was pleasantly surprised by how many outfits I could make with what I already have, but there are some glaringly obvious gaps that I’m looking to fill. I want to be able to fully utilize my clothes and accessories since I spent money on them so I need to find ways to wear the things I have (and want to get) that work with my lifestyle.

For outfit inspiration, I usually look at a combination of Pinterest and Fashion Month runway content. With fashion month nearing its end, I’ve had no shortage of runway inspiration, but its glitz and glamour mostly breezed right by me this time. Pinterest has been a little helpful, but most of what caught my eye was dressier than how I’m intending to style myself. My ultimate goal with my wardrobe is to build one that vibes with who and where I am now. Currently, I’m not a “attends fashion week” kind of fancy nor am I out to dinner and drinks in the city or going to special events often enough to justify buying designer pieces that I can’t also wear to run errands.

Don’t get me wrong! I still like seeing the Fashion Month content to see what styles, textures, and colors might be making their way to the masses but lately, my biggest inspiration has been my own life. Of course, I’ll still have a few dressier things on my list. I like getting dressed up for date nights and like to be prepared when I get invitations to weddings, dinners, baby showers, etc., but I’m fully embracing being something like a fancy homebody who slightly overdresses.

To help achieve this, here’s what I’ll be shopping for this fall.

fall wardrobe wishlist 2024

twilly scarf • baseball cap • medium wash denim • black denim • motorcycle jacket • chocolate brown bag • brown sneakers • chocolate brown heeled boots

+ twilly scarf: I’ve been obsessed with twilly scarves as a way to incorporate prints and color into my closet since I’m not keen on printed or very colorful clothes. I love the colors in this one and it’s made of mulberry silk so it’s super soft.

+ navy baseball cap: I have a green baseball cap that you’ll get sick of seeing me wear. It’s an easy way to make an outfit look effortless when you’re having a bad hair day. I want a navy hat since it’ll work with the twilly. Also, I like this one from Favorite Daughter because I get to troll my siblings with it.

+ medium wash & black denim: I don’t own a pair of jeans. Since I’ve been working from home for years I didn’t see the point in buying new jeans when my old ones gave out. Well, I should say didn’t have any jeans. I bought this pair and this pair over the weekend. I’d already tried them on in-store so I knew what I wanted, but knew I could probably hold off on buying them until they went on sale. I’m glad I waited. When I saw they were having a 20% off in-app sale I bought them.

That sale is over but LTK is having an in-app sale starting on Thursday the 26th where you’ll get 20% off at Abercrombie and a few other stores. If you’re looking to save some money on denim, this is a good time to buy. I’ll remind you in Thursday’s newsletter.

+ motorcycle jacket: I’ve wanted a leather motorcycle jacket for over a decade. I love how they smell and feel. Plus, I like how they can easily add a touch of edginess to an otherwise basic outfit. This is one of my splurges on the list, but as the saying goes, “Buy well, buy once.” I like that this one has gold hardware since I’m not much of a silver jewelry wearer.

+ dark brown shoulder bag: I have way too much brown and tan in my closet to not have a dark brown bag. I have a medium brown bag that I still love and has held up well over the years, but I want something darker too. I love the one pictured, but I might get this one instead. It’s more budget-friendly.

+ brown sneakers: I want these for the same reason I want a dark brown bag—more wardrobe versatility. I could toss these on with denim, shorts, or trousers and the look will work.

+ chocolate brown heeled boots: I want to wear these boots to make any outfit I’d wear the sneakers with a little dressier. One of my wardrobe goals is versatility so having a dressier shoe option will help there. I already have a pair of boots from the brand so I’m confident I’ll love these too.

What would a wardrobe wishlist be without showing how I’d style these! Wearing what you buy is where most of the fun comes in anyway.

cowl neck top (similar) • tailored shorts • green baseball cap • dark brown bag • brown sneakers

The only things I’m missing to create this outfit are the bag and the shoes. This outfit is just the right amount of dressy and casual to have a lowkey brunch while shopping or running other errands.

turtleneck sweater • black denim • motorcycle jacket • colorful bag • pink pumps (similar)

I love the idea of wearing this for a movie date night! We love going to a local spot that serves AMAZING food so wearing something cute and comfortable is key. The bag is on the small side so it won’t take up a lot of space in the seat. The moto jacket adds even more interest to this outfit so I’m really hoping I can get it on sale. It will also work with the dress in this next outfit.

fall dinner date night outfit

cashmere mockneck • dress (similar-$$$) (similar-$$) • brown bag • chocolate heeled boots

The first thing I thought about this outfit idea was this it’s perfect for a nice dinner. There are birthdays coming up and other occasions for a nice dinner out so I’d love to have these boots and a brown bag to complete the look.

casual fall outfit idea

red coat (similar) • white tee (here’s another option I love too) • medium wash denim • white sneakers (most similar) (also cute) • navy baseball cap • brown handbag (similar) • twilly scarf

This red coat is older than I am and I love that about it. It was my grandmother’s or great-grandmother’s. It’s made it through countless closet purges and I refuse to part ways with it. Throughout the years, I’ve never been able to create an outfit I liked using this coat. I love how casual this outfit is and I only need the hat and the twilly to make it happen.
