how to properly care for your clothes

While I may be new to refining my personal style, one thing I’ve always been dedicated to is thoughtfully caring for my clothes. Clothing is an investment—whether you splurge on designer pieces or find hidden gems at a thrift store. Regardless of where you shop, the key to maintaining a polished wardrobe goes far beyond what you wear. It’s about how you care for your clothes, ensuring they look their best for as long as possible.

In today’s fast-paced fashion world, most of the focus is placed on the excitement of shopping for new clothes and choosing statement-making outfits. However, even the most stunning pieces can lose their allure if they aren’t cared for properly. If you’ve ever seen a leather handbag with dry rot you know exactly what I mean. Not caring for your clothes properly can result in fading colors, stretched fabrics, or damaged materials, taking away from the overall look you’re going for. By giving your clothes the attention they deserve, you can extend their lifespan and keep them looking amazing season after season.

From washing techniques and storage tips to fabric-specific care, maintaining your clothes doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Whether you’re dealing with everyday basics or high-end designer items, here’s how to protect your clothes like a pro—no matter the price tag.

Ditch The Laundry Basket

We have lived in this house for almost two years and still haven’t bought a laundry basket, even though I keep saying we should get one. I don’t mean that you can’t have a laundry basket at all. They’re pretty useful to move your clothes to and from the laundry room. What I do mean is that acting like you don’t have a laundry basket or a chair in the corner to thow your clothes on forces you to put your clothes away as soon as they’re done drying. You won’t have anywhere to keep them if you don’t.

Not only does this help your clothes look nicer, but it keeps your space clean too. You won’t have clothes piled up and making your place look cluttered.

Use Laundry Bags

Using laundry bags is a simple way to start taking better care of your stuff. If you’ve ever been frustrated by missing socks or a pair of underwear you know you washed, but somehow disappeared laundry bags prevent that from happening again. These small items can easily get lost in the wash, slipping between other clothes or even vanishing somewhere in the machine. By placing socks and underwear in a mesh laundry bag, you can keep them together throughout the entire washing process. No more hunting for lone socks at the bottom of the laundry basket or ending up with mismatched pairs. It’s an effortless way to stay organized and prevent the dreaded “laundry monster” from stealing your favorites.

Beyond socks and underwear, laundry bags are incredibly useful for washing more delicate items that are labeled “hand wash only.” These garments, like silk tops, lace lingerie, or cashmere sweaters, often require extra care to maintain their quality. But instead of the time-consuming process of hand washing, you can safely toss them in the washing machine when protected inside a laundry bag. On the delicate cycle, the mesh bag shields these sensitive fabrics from harsh agitation, stretching, or snagging, keeping them in pristine condition. This simple trick saves you time while ensuring your cherished pieces stay fresh, soft, and free from damage.

Use Wool Dryer Balls

Ditching dryer sheets for wool dryer balls has a few key benefits. First, they cut down on drying time by improving air circulation in the dryer. As the wool balls bounce around, they create space between your clothes, allowing hot air to move more freely. This means your clothes dry faster, reducing their exposure to heat, which can wear down fibers, cause shrinkage, or fade colors over time. Less drying time also means less energy consumption, making wool dryer balls not only great for your clothes but also for the environment.

Additionally, wool dryer balls naturally soften fabrics without the need for chemical-laden dryer sheets or fabric softeners. These chemicals can build up on clothes, potentially irritating sensitive skin or reducing the absorbency of towels and linens. Wool dryer balls, on the other hand, are free of synthetic additives and help fluff and soften your clothes naturally. By using them, you can keep your fabrics in better shape, avoid unnecessary residue on your garments, and extend the life of your clothes by preventing the wear and tear caused by prolonged exposure to heat and chemicals.

Nothing Gets Put Away Wrinkly

Ironing or steaming your clothes before putting them away is a great way to maintain their quality and appearance over time. Plus they look really good folded in your drawers or hung in the closet. Steaming or ironing your clothes helps smooth out any wrinkles or creases that may have formed when you were wearing them or when they got washed. Leaving clothes wrinkled for extended periods can cause the fabric to become set in that shape, making it more difficult to remove wrinkles later. Ironing or steaming keeps your garments looking fresh and crisp, which is especially important for pieces made of delicate fabrics, as it prevents permanent creasing and maintains the fabric’s integrity.

Additionally, ironing or steaming serves a protective function by removing moisture and killing bacteria or dust mites that may have accumulated on your clothes. This is especially important for items made of natural fibers, like cotton, wool, or linen, which are more prone to absorbing moisture from the air. Moisture left in clothes can lead to mildew or even fabric damage if stored improperly. By steaming or ironing your garments before putting them away, you’re ensuring they’re clean, dry, and properly pressed, which can help extend their lifespan and keep them looking new for longer.

Treat All of Your Stuff Like The Good Stuff

Though I’d love it to be this way, my entire wardrobe isn’t made of high-quality pieces. Sometimes you just have to buy what’s available at your price point and the price point isn’t always “my credit card has no limit.”

Treating all of your clothes like the “good stuff” helps them last longer by promoting consistent care, regardless of the item’s value. When you handle every piece in your wardrobe with the same attention you’d give to nicer or high-end items—like following proper washing instructions, using gentle detergents, and storing them correctly—you protect the fabric’s integrity and prevent unnecessary wear and tear. This mindset encourages better habits, like avoiding over-washing and handling clothes delicately, which helps preserve their shape, color, and quality over time, ultimately extending the lifespan of your entire wardrobe.

Repair What You Can, Get Rid of What’s Beyond Saving

I know it’s hard, but you have to know when it’s time to say goodbye. Repairing what you can and parting with what can’t be saved is a painful but important part of caring for your clothes. You can maintain the quality of your wardrobe while being mindful that not everything is meant to last forever.

When you repair minor damage, like a missing button, a loose hem, or a small tear, you’re actively preserving the life of your garments. Simple fixes can often restore your clothing to nearly new condition, saving you the cost of replacements and reducing waste. By taking the time to mend items, you’re demonstrating respect for the materials and craftsmanship, which helps extend the life of your wardrobe.

On the other hand, knowing when to let go of clothes that are beyond repair is equally important. Holding onto worn-out or irreparably damaged clothing can lead to clutter and may prevent you from caring properly for the items that are still in good shape. Old, damaged pieces can take up space in your closet, making it harder to organize and care for the clothes that you still wear. By letting go of items that are past their prime, you create a more curated and manageable wardrobe, ensuring that the clothes you keep receive the attention they deserve, stay in rotation, and maintain their quality over time.

I have a good amount of detergents, sprays, treatments, and other tools to suggest to help your clothes stay in top shape. I’ve linked them all here on my LTK for easy access. If you have any questions about them send me a DM on Instagram. Seriously! I don’t bite.
